Make a Plan and Shift With It

We all know the old adage of make a plan and stick to it. Yeah, that didn’t go so well for 2020.

Whether you are a parent, an employee, a business owner, or any combination of these, you know that the norm is gone. Time for a different way of planning. We’re looking at it as making a plan and shifting with it…staying nimble, and realizing there are many factors that are going to lead to change, adjustment, and quick pivots along the way.

In this issue you’ll find an article on scenario planning (definitely learning how to make a plan that can shift), as well as the latest stats on parents and the current state of school decisions (Happy Parents Day on Sunday!). We also take a moment to shine a light on all of the good trouble Congressman John Lewis created, and round out with some uplifting innovations and an absolute must watch on sustainability with Zac Efron (yes, that Zac Efron…we’re all in this together).

Enjoy the weekend, and happy reading, listening and watching!

Reads of the Week

Supporting Working Parents
Unfortunately, things appear to be going from bad to worse for working parents, as there continues to be so much uncertainty with the school year just around the corner. In April, only a few weeks into the COVID-19 pandemic, 6% of people surveyed said they planned to leave the workforce due to the pressures of parenting; however, according to the second survey last week, that percentage has grown to 27% of respondents now saying they plan to leave work.

Given these trying times for all of us, what, if anything, can leaders do to support employees? In simple terms – how can leaders create a culture of understanding that we are all having to wear many hats – parent, teacher, caregiver, etc.? Giving employees permission to be themselves will help ease underlining tensions and foster an environment of understanding.  Harvard Business Review

Planning for the Future
In past issues of #ScoutingGood, we have highlighted the new trend of scenario planning, a strategic focus that is gaining more and more steam. Scenario planning seems to be essential in the nonprofit and social sectors as the pandemic demands more resources and increased pressure for organizations to do more in the social justice sector. Scenario planning is quite different from other planning efforts you have likely undertaken in the past. Two essential keys are to dig deep to figure out how it would feel to live each of the scenarios and not pick the scenario you might “like the best”.  Deloitte

Worth a Listen

Mark your calendar for Wednesday, July 29th, as Former First Lady Michelle Obama will debut her new podcast on Spotify. According to the press release announcing the newly developed Michelle Obama Podcast, “…the series will bring listeners the former First Lady’s most candid and personal conversations, showing us what’s possible when we allow ourselves to be vulnerable, to open up, and to focus on what matters most.”

Good Scout of the Week

A truly good scout who encouraged “good trouble”, Civil Rights activist and Congressman John Lewis died last week at the age of 80. May we all take his words with us as we move forward –“When you see something that is not right, not fair, not just, you have to speak up. You have to do something.” Newsweek

Believe it or not, Halloween is just around the corner. Last Halloween, Target introduced Hyde & EEK! Boutique costumes designed with all kids in mind. These adaptive and sensory-friendly designs were not only adorable but they were affordable as well. This year, Target is doubling their costume options and adding designs for adults too.
